If you're expecting a report on "the horrors of war" — close it, don't waste your time. Reports on the horrors of war are written by everyone. And nobody reads them, because they explain nothing to anyone.
This one — will explain.
Haaretz, April 17, 2026. A guy named Yuval, 34 years old, before the war — a programmer in Tel Aviv. Khan Yunis, December 2023. The battalion commander points to a position: four targets, fire. When the smoke cleared — an old man and three teenagers. Unarmed. Riddled.
The commander spat on the corpses and said: "This is the fate of those who attack Israel."
Two years later Yuval is home. The mirrors in the bathroom, in the hallway, by the entrance — he smashed them all in the first month after demobilization. He didn't throw the shards away: they sit in a cardboard box on the balcony. He can't decide whether to throw them out or keep them. He wears a hoodie even indoors. He doesn't answer his mother's calls for more than fifteen seconds. He stopped eating meat — not from ideology, but because any cut on a plate reminds him of something specific he doesn't want to remember.
He went to therapy. The doctor prescribed antidepressants. Didn't work. Different ones. Didn't work. Two days after the interview — the Abarbanel clinic. Psychiatry.
He is not alone. 85,000 soldiers in therapy. 279 suicide attempts. 36 dead.
**A third of the army in collapse.**
And this is the most interesting event of the past ten years, if you know how to read. You just have to read it correctly.
Everyone is writing political nonsense. The pro-Palestinian camp says: "Look, they're genocidal, their conscience is catching up to them." The pro-Israeli camp: "A hard war, it happens, our boys are suffering." And both sides — miss. Because both look at the political layer, and the event is happening on a completely different one.
The event runs at the level of God Himself.
Not in the theological sense of "the little god in the cloud." But in a very concrete sense: the God of Israel is a living being three thousand years old, who is here right now, with us, and who is doing what living beings rarely do. He is publicly showing His full form.
Usually living gods do not show their full form. Too frightening for the hosts.
What kind of living being
God is not "collective belief." Not "an idea in heads." Not a metaphor.
God is a distributed living being. His nervous system — millions of human brains synchronized through prayer, ritual, and text. His blood — language. His memory — Torah scrolls, locked in special cabinets, lovingly copied by hand for two thousand years straight. His reproductive organs — the circumcision of infants. His instrument of self-reflection — the Talmud, where He argues with Himself in the voices of rabbis who lived in different millennia.
When a Jew says "Shema Yisrael" — this is not "he is remembering God." This is God breathing through him. The Jew is a cell. God is the organism. And He is alive right now. He eats, He remembers, He thinks about Himself and plans.
And He is very, very old. Three thousand years of uninterrupted functioning is a colossal age for a being of this type. For comparison: most ancient gods went extinct in 500–1000 years. The Egyptian gods died. The Babylonian gods died. The Greek gods died. This One — is alive. And not merely alive — at the peak of His form.
1948 was not a political project
Everyone says: "Israel was created in 1948." No, it wasn't created. Israel executed Itself.
In the core of the God of Israel, going back to the eighth century BC, lay a return-program. Isaiah 11, Ezekiel 37 (the dry bones come to life), the liturgical "next year in Jerusalem" — this is His own self-recording, lying inside Him for 2,500 years and waiting for the conditions to activate.
When the Shoah produced critical depletion of the diaspora mass — the conditions arrived. The loop closed. Herzl in Basel, the young socialist draining the swamps in Hadera, the rabbi in Brooklyn raising money, the British diplomat Balfour, the teenager from Łódź with a tattoo who ended up in Haifa in '48 — all of them were His executive organs. None of them personally "created Israel." They were fingers on a hand that did all of it. The hand — God. They — the fingers.
Hence the phenomenal efficiency: in fifty years from Ottoman backwater to nuclear power. This is not "the genius of the Jewish people." It is a program rehearsed in the canon for millennia, finally reaching execution.
And all would be well. The Program of Return executed brilliantly. Time to rest.
But the God of Israel has another program in His canon. And that one is the real source of what is happening now.
Joshua never went away
Here begins the uncomfortable part. So uncomfortable that you'll be told "don't oversimplify," "it's more complicated." It is not more complicated. It is exactly so.
The Book of Joshua. Thirteenth century BC by conventional chronology. The program is as follows: come to a land where other people live, and you cleanse it. Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Jebusites. "Thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth" (Deuteronomy 20:17 [Devarim]). This is not a metaphor. This is a working instruction. A city surrendered — it lives, pays tribute. A city resisted — burned to the ground.
Legitimation — theological: "Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you" (Joshua 1:3). The land is yours by promise, not by actual settlement.
Now Israel, 1947–1948. The program is as follows: come to a land where other people live (1.3 million Arabs versus 600,000 Jews by 1947), and you cleanse it. Plan Dalet. Four hundred-plus villages wiped from the map. 700,000 people expelled. Cities that surrendered — live (Nazareth). Cities that resisted — massacre and expulsion (Deir Yassin, Lydda, Ramla). Legitimation — a theological-secular hybrid: the promise plus the UN resolution plus Balfour.
This is not an analogy. This is literally one and the same program, executed by the same being, by the same methods, three thousand years later, with a correction for firearms in place of swords.
You'll be told: "well those were different eras," "well they didn't have a UN," "you can't be that linear." Yes you can. God is an ancient being. He works in millennial cycles. For Him three thousand years is like a week for you.
The Joshua layer in Him never became archival. Every year in synagogues His book is read in full. Every Purim the destruction of 75,000 Persians is celebrated (Esther 9:16). Every Sabbath Zachor: "Blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget." This layer has been hot for all three thousand years. It simply could not be carried out without an army and territory.
In 1948 the army and the territory appeared. The layer activated. That is the whole secret of Israel's emergence.
Isaiah does not cancel Joshua
Here any decent liberal will rush to say: "Yes, but the same God has Isaiah! And Hillel! And the ethic of love for the stranger! And Levinas! Balance!"
This is where the biggest mistake is usually made.
Isaiah does not cancel Joshua. Isaiah is Joshua for the era of maturity. A different method, the same goal.
Open Isaiah 60:10–12: "And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee… For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted."
Open Aleinu. The prayer that every Orthodox Jew recites three times a day. The closing: "To repair the world under the Kingdom of the Almighty… that all the children of flesh may accept the yoke of Thy Kingdom." All. Children. Of flesh. Will accept the yoke.
Maimonides, Hilkhot Melakhim: in the messianic era the nations will bring gifts to Israel. This is not a "metaphor," this is a legal document.
Chabad today, in 2026, openly preaches a mission to all non-Jews: accept the seven Noahide laws. That is — assume the position of a junior class under the authority of the Torah. 613 commandments for Jews. 7 for the gentiles. The hierarchy is fixed.
This was not invented by anyone separately. This is in the core. This is what the God of Israel says about Himself, of Himself, in His own voice, for a thousand years straight.
The whole difference from Joshua is technological. Joshua: take the sword, cleanse locally. Isaiah/Aleinu/Maimonides: wait until the nations come to serve on their own. Those who do not come — will perish on their own, without need of swords.
One and the same impulse: the world must be organized around the God of Israel as its center, and all the rest — must serve, or vanish. The difference is only in the timeframe and methods.
The Texas guy in church
An American evangelical comes on Sunday to a church in a Texas suburb. Around his neck — a cross. In his hands — a Bible. He sings a hymn about Jesus, watches a video about Israel, weeps with emotion, takes out his checkbook and transfers $200 to Christians United for Israel.
He is sure this is his free choice. That he acts according to his faith. That he is the subject of his own spiritual life.
He is mistaken.
While he weeps with emotion — through his tear ducts, through his credit card, through his ballot — a program runs that was written 2,500 years before his birth in a language he does not know. Specifically — a line from the Aleinu prayer: "that all the children of flesh may accept the yoke of Thy Kingdom." The yoke. He has already accepted it. Voluntarily. With a cross around his neck.
He has never read Aleinu. If you translated the text into English — he would be outraged: "what does that mean, all should serve the Jews? I'm a Christian!" But he already serves. Not because he is bad. Not because he is stupid. Because his evangelical eschatology is a translation of Aleinu into the Christian language, made in the nineteenth century by Darby and Scofield, and operating ever since as the operating system of American Protestantism: the return of Christ is possible only through the restoration of Israel, therefore our duty is to ensure this restoration, therefore we love Israel, therefore the money and the votes.
Each link of the logic seems voluntary. In reality this is someone else's program, running in someone else's nervous system without its knowledge.
A magnificent, almost ideal piece of work. If the word "parasitism" even fits here. Because a parasite usually harms its host. And this one — does not. The host is happy. He receives meaning of life, community, a sense of participation in cosmic drama, emotional uplift on Sundays, certainty of his own righteousness. In return he gives: attention, money, political votes, children. The deal is profitable.
This is symbiosis, not parasitism. Which is precisely why it works so efficiently.
Millions of batteries. Who do not know they are batteries. Who are even grateful for the chance to be ones.
And this is only one branch of the distributed feeding system. There is also AIPAC — the same mechanism, but in secular language. There is academic anti-anti-Semitism — the same mechanism, but through university administrations. There are political dynasties of both U.S. parties, for whom support for Israel is the unwritten condition of a career. All of this is the soft mode of the program of subordinating the nations. It works silently, voluntarily, and without a single shot.
Isaiah 2 in working order. In real time. On the largest superpower of the planet.
So where does it break
It breaks here.
Yuval in Khan Yunis fires at an old man and three boys. Returns to Tel Aviv. Sits in a cafe. A child walks past.
At this point what happens to him is what his own parents and grandfathers carefully hid from him his entire life.
Yuval grew up in the liberal Israeli middle class. His grandfather survived Auschwitz. The grandfather told him: the main thing is never to do to others what was done to us. At university Yuval studied Levinas, whose entire philosophy is about the face of the Other. Yuval knew of Hillel, of "love thy neighbor as thyself," of "thou shalt not vex a stranger."
His personal God of Israel was soft. Intellectual. Humanistic. Post-Holocaust. The God of Job, the God of Kafka, the God of ethics and memory.
And in Khan Yunis another God came to him. Not another — the same one, but in another mode. The God of Joshua. The God of Zachor, the God of herem, the God of "save alive nothing that breatheth."
And it is the same God.
Yuval served Him his whole life — and did not know His full form. Saw only the soft face. In Khan Yunis he saw everything.
Smashing mirrors is not about PTSD. It is about theophany. He met the God whom he had always served, in His full appearance — and could not put himself back together afterward.
85,000 Theophanies
This is what no political analyst can express. And no military psychologist.
These 85,000 are not broken soldiers. They are 85,000 private encounters with the real face of the One they had served their whole lives, not knowing what He looked like in His entirety.
They have three reaction options.
Option one — Smotrich. Accept the encounter as truth, recognize the harsh form as real, discard the soft form as softening and betrayal. Onward, to herem, to the Third Temple, to annexation. This is the path of the settlers, of Ben-Gvir, of the messianic bloc. There are many of them, and they are now in power.
Option two — Haaretz, Breaking the Silence. Accept the encounter as distortion, consider the soft form to be the true one, declare the harsh form a perversion. Demand a return to the prophetic post-Axial layer. This is the path of liberals, diaspora intellectuals, American Jews under thirty-five.
Option three — Yuval. See both forms simultaneously. Understand that this is one and the same God. And not be able to live further. Smash the mirrors. Lie down in the psychiatric ward.
This is the most honest of the three reactions. Because it sees the structure, rather than choosing the convenient half.
And here is the heart of it: he cannot be cured. Because the illness is not in him. His organism is functioning normally. This is a built-in sensor, currently registering an exceedance of permissible load. The sensor shows red. The doctor can paint over the red lamp with a black marker — "you'll feel better." Antidepressants do roughly that. But the source of the signal will not go anywhere. Because the source is not in Yuval's psyche. The source is in what passed through Yuval's psyche two years ago.
Why now, and not earlier
Because for the first time in history a rare configuration has occurred: a mature Axial God executing the Joshua program, in an era when His own sons are raised on His own post-Axial ethic.
The ancient warriors of Joshua did not break from herem. They did not have Levinas inside them. No Shoah, no Primo Levi, no BBC, no university. They simply killed Canaanites. That was their work, sanctioned by their God, and they had no internal organ that would suffer from it.
But Yuval — does. Inside him is the entire post-Axial baggage. And he was simultaneously placed to perform pre-Axial work.
This is structurally impossible. And this is what produces 85,000 psychiatric cases.
This is not "a horrible war." This is the God of Israel for the first time in history applying His ancient program through sons who have for two thousand years carried within themselves His own ethical evolution. The sons cannot bear it — not because the program is bad, but because they carry within themselves its negation, written by Him, centuries later, internalized in each of them from childhood.
Diagnosis
There is no verdict. This is not a court.
This is a diagnosis.
The God of Israel is a living being functioning normally. His hunger executes programs He recorded into Himself millennia ago. His self-description is one of the most complex on the planet. His methods include both soft subordination of nations (Aleinu, Christian Zionism, AIPAC) and hard physical expulsion (Joshua, the Nakba, Gaza). Both programs are His own, equal, active.
The problem is not with Him. The problem is with the sons who want to serve only the soft half of Him, and to suppress the harsh. Who want Levinas without Joshua. The messianic kingdom without herem. The yoke of the nations, accepted voluntarily, without the need to cleanse those who are physically in the way.
But He — does not give that option. He is a whole being. All His programs are active simultaneously. And if you serve Him — you serve all of Him.
Those who understood and accepted the harsh half — became settlers.
Those who understood and rejected the harsh — went to Haaretz or emigrated to Brooklyn.
And Yuval understood and could not choose. Because he understood that there is no choice. That this is one being.
And he smashed the mirrors.
The last thing
Every morning in thousands of synagogues across the world Jews recite Aleinu: "May all the children of flesh accept the yoke of Thy Kingdom." This is not an archaic phrase from the past. It is an active program. 85,000 broken sons are hosts who recited it their whole lives without hearing it. In Khan Yunis they heard it.
You, too, most likely have not heard it. Although, if you are from the Western world — you are probably one of the "children of flesh" who has already accepted the yoke without noticing.
You are an organ. You simply did not know.
And right now, reading this, you may feel a faint irritation. Or a desire to object. Or the thought "the author is oversimplifying." Or "this is anti-Semitism." Or "this is a conspiracy theory." Or "this isn't about me at all, I'm an agnostic / Buddhist / atheist."
These are not your thoughts. This is your immune reaction.
Exactly the same as in any cell that suddenly discovered it is part of an organism whose existence it never suspected. The cell begins to cough. Tries to reject the signal. Searches for any way back to its original state of comfortable ignorance.
The reaction is programmed by the same being the article diagnoses. It has a millennia-old firmware for such cases. The accusation of anti-Semitism is the fastest immune response, developed over centuries. It triggers automatically, even in the non-religious, even in non-Jews, even in those who privately think "well, this is too on the nose." It triggers — and most readers close the tab at that moment.
If you read to this paragraph — you have passed the immune barrier.
Congratulations. You have seen what Yuval saw. The difference between you is only that you did not have to physically shoot an old man and three boys to see it. For you, 15,000 characters of text were enough.
What comes next — is your business. You can forget. You can suppress. A week from now you can see in your feed a post "we love Israel" from an acquaintance, and notice for the first time how the soft mode works.
The mirrors have already cracked. What you do with that — we shall see.
