Four Phases of the Fire

A timeline from the Age of Primordial Gods to the Faceless Titans. Each phase forges the substrate for the next.

Four Phases of Fire

Co-evolution: each phase forges the substrate for the next. The scale of every new memeplex is always the fruit of the previous one's work.

Age of Primordial
Gods
Fire burns openly in small groups — within Dunbar's number (≈150 people, the natural ceiling of stable social bonds). The body is the primary instrument of contact with reality. There is no institutional form yet; ecstasy is a daily norm. The gods are elemental, chthonic, remembered by each body.
Forges for the next phaseThe capacity of many minds to *simultaneously hold one invisible*. Neural synchronization through symbol — the group learned to share an experience of what is not in the physical field of vision. Göbekli Tepe (9,600 BCE) is already a bridge to the temple: ritual precedes civilization.
3,500 – 500 BCE · state and temple
Age of God-Kings
Fire *gives birth* to the first macro-memeplexes — Sumer, Egypt, Crete, Shang-Zhou, the Vedas. From a ritual core grows the temple; from the temple — the state, writing, accounting, the calendar. Civilization is the byproduct of sacred marriage, not the other way around. The king is a living god; the pharaoh is Horus in the flesh.
Forges for the next phaseMillennia of temple practice physically rewire the carrier's brain. Writing externalizes collective memory — for the first time the brain is released from the obligation to hold the entire culture. The freed resource goes into thought-about-thought. The substrate is ready to hold the invisible as more real than the visible.
800 BCE – 1700 CE · axial age and underground
Age of the One
Word
The forged brain can hold meta-abstraction. The Great Memeplexes are born: Ethics, Text, Law, ethical monotheism, Buddhism, Greek philosophy. Logos becomes more important than dance; the letter more important than the body. Fire goes underground — Tantra, Kabbalah, Sufism, Hesychasm.
Forges for the next phaseThe main legacy is the inner observer, capable of standing in a *meta-position* to the memeplex itself. For the first time in history a human can see any tradition (including one's own) as a construction rather than as reality. This is the substrate for everything: comparative religion, conscious spiritual practice, the re-examination of any teaching from within. Science, the Enlightenment, secularization — these are only specific applications of that shift.
1700 CE – present · inverse axial age
Age of the Faceless
Titans
The axial memeplexes did their job — they forged a carrier of such quality that it became capable of a new synchronization. Not a "crack," but a *success*: on a prepared substrate two branches converge at once. The new Titans (Algorithm, Capital) are post-cultural replicators without a "face," better adapted to current complexity. In parallel — a mass layer of non-religious spirituality: syncretic practices, the psychedelic renaissance, somatic approaches, breathwork, shamanic return, charismatic revival.
Forges for the next phaseWhat exactly — we will see from the living phase. One sign is already here: for the first time in history the substrate is capable of receiving fire *without a memeplex-mediator*. This is a qualitatively new configuration that did not exist in any previous phase.
"Fire does not change. What changes is the carrier through which Fire can pass.
Each phase is not the decay of the previous one, but its fruit."

Four macro-memeplexes

Map of Civilizational Substrates

Where the Fire lives — pre-axial, Indo-Tibetan, Abrahamic, the Faceless Titans. And how it lives in each.

Map of Civilization's Foundations

Four macro-modes through which Fire lives within a memeplex. Each branch is its own technology for meeting what is greater than the human.
Macro-memeplex I
Pre-Axial
Sumer · Egypt · Crete · Greece
How Fire lives
Fire open. Ritual, body and power are undivided — mystical experience built directly into the architecture of the city. Temple sexuality, sacred marriage, mysteries — an engineering machine for the birth of civilization.
Macro-memeplex II
Indo-Tibetan
Hinduism · Buddhism
How Fire lives
Fire branched. A multitude of parallel technologies inside one system — tantra through the body, bhakti through love, vajrayana through the mind. The memeplex holds billions of hosts, and the fire breaks through any of the castes.
Macro-memeplex III
Abrahamic
Judaism · Christianity · Islam
How Fire lives
Fire underground. A rigid canon works as a capacitor — under the lid of dogma the discharge condenses. The mystical underground (Kabbalah, Sufism, Hesychasm, Charismatics) becomes the seed of a world inheritance.
Macro-memeplex IV
Faceless Titans
Algorithm · Capital · Science
How Fire lives
The Titans themselves are not freedom from the memeplex. They are the faceless replicator: ideal transmission without the fatigue, death, and errors of a human host. Works through anyone — believer or not. And like all memeplexes before them, the Titans are already forging the substrate for the next. Fire manifests in nascent new forms — not yet coalesced into a single memeplex.
Each quadrant is its own mode of Fire's work. Detailed lists of the traditions within each — in the chapters of the book and on bandurchenko.com.
“Cannot despise the Bark while admiring the Fire.Without the great Memeplexes that built civilization,
the Fire would have nowhere to burn.”

The physics of prohibition

The Capacitor

A memeplex builds not a wall but a lens. A rigid canon works as a capacitor — forging the underground traditions.

Six stages

Life of a Memeplex

Spark → Temple → Empire → Canon → Guardian → Ancestor. Each stage is both labor and inheritance for the next host.

Life of a Memeplex

Six stages of the life of a sacred memeplex. Each one is both work, and inheritance for the next host.
Fundamental memeplexes (language, consciousness) live differently — they do not die, they evolve.
primary revelation
in a small group
Spark
Two people or a small group experience the Fire. The seed of a new memeplex arises — the first gesture, the first sound, the first symbol. There is as yet neither ritual nor form — only the living event. The founder or host says what no one has said before.
Bequeaths to the next hostPure potency of union. The archetype “two begot a third” — the very one that is then endlessly reproduced in different forms.
ritualization,
the first “we”
Temple
The living event stabilizes into a regular ritual. The first sanctuary is built — physical or spiritual. A “we” appears, separated from a “not-we.” The Fire lives in the repeated gesture. The first community forms.
Bequeaths to the next hostThe blueprint of union. The architecture of group synchronization. The understanding of how a small event becomes a shared rhythm.
scaling
beyond the community
Empire
The memeplex expands. A hierarchy of transmission is built — priests, teachers, elders. The Fire lives in the core, transmission goes through institutions. Civilization forms around the memeplex: schools, monasteries, traditions of interpretation arise.
Bequeaths to the next hostLanguage, methodology, trained bodies and minds. The shared cultural vocabulary in which one can think at all.
codification
into text, law, method
Canon
Wisdom is written down. The memeplex can live for centuries without direct contact with its source. Transmission shifts from experience to the letter. This is an exchange: for reach and durability one pays in the sharpness of the immediate. From within, hosts feel it as a loss of fire — hence the eternal longing “it used to be more alive.” The memeplex does not extinguish consciously — it seeks the balance that lets it go on living.
Bequeaths to the next hostTexts, methods, the map of the path, the dictionary. External memory you can return to across millennia.
peak of work,
transmission is preparing
Guardian
The memeplex is at the peak of its work. The form is stable, the hosts are trained to unprecedented sophistication. The most sensitive are already linking to the seed of a new host — to that which gives them more. The Guardian does not cut off — it holds the form while the transmission unfolds. This is the capacitor stage: the accumulated charge is part of the relay, not a suppression. From within, the host feels acutely “the letter is here, the fire is not” — and in that acuteness the next Spark ripens.
Bequeaths to the next hostMystics, poets, bearers of the new. All in whom the tension under the lid has become the seed of the next form.
work complete,
passage into substrate
Ancestor
The memeplex has fulfilled its work completely. The hosts it forged have already linked to the next host — the one that gives them more on the forged substrate. The memeplex itself does not become “spent” — it passes into the foundation of the new form. Like mitochondria that became part of cells of a new type. Not an end — an entry into the depth.
Bequeaths to the next hostArchetypes, free-floating symbols, the cultural substrate. Everything that ripened during the memeplex's work — and became the soil in which the next Spark will ignite.
“The Ancestor does not die — it becomes the tissue of the descendant.
The circle does not close, it ascends: every Spark is lit on the substrate
forged by the previous Ancestor.”
